Let’s face it, keyword tracking is essential for proper ppc optimization… whether your a ppc affiliate or product owner some sort of ppc tracking software should be in your virtual tool chest.  Lucky for you the guys over at Tracking202 put together an open source version of their killer tracking software that you can download and install on your own server and it’s absolutely FREE.

If you’re new to tracking your ppc and even ppv campaigns or realize that you’re flying blind right now with your existing ppc or ppv campaigns because you simply don’t know what’s working and what’s not… then Prosper202 is a great place to start.

I’m not going to say it’s the greatest pay per click tracking tool ever… but it does have some features not found in most other tracking tools.  Prosper202, like most software apps, has it’s pro’s and con’s… we’ll get into those in a few minutes.

Step 1 – Prosper202 1.6.1 Modded Version

You’re probably wondering what’s the deal with this modded version… We’ll since Prosper202 is open source software, the community can add tweaks and mods to it and make it better.  And they certainly have…  There are several mods currently available.

I’ve been searching for different mods that are very useful when tracking your marketing campaigns.  I’ve taken a few of the most popular one’s and added them into a Prosper202 install package.  So now instead of trying to mod it yourself, you just install the modded version and get 3 great mods included.

Prosper202 – Pros and Cons

Hopefully you’ve had a chance to watch the Prosper202 Modded Version video…  It should give you a little bit of an idea of what Prosper202 can do and the kind of data you can get from your pay per click campaigns.

Let’s start with some of the pro’s of Prosper202:

• First it’s one of the better keyword tracking ppc tools available today…

  You might be wondering why?  Well most of the ppc tracking chores are handled on the server not within the tracking link. That’s a huge advantage.

• Here’s my favorite – It’s 100% FREE to download and use…

  This is great if your just getting started and on a tight budget or if you’ve realized you need to know what’s going on, cuz you’re not tracking your campaigns and flying blind sucks.

• You install it and run it on your own server…

  You own your data, it’s on your database not someone else’s server.  Your conversion data should be one of your closest held business secrets, why would you want to share that with anyone else?

• Designed from the ground up for ppc affiliate marketing but works great with most ppv networks as well
• With version 1.5.1 and later, it’s great for product owners
• You can use it for much more then just ppc and ppv…  it’s a link tracker, so you can track most any link you want
• Works with direct linking and landing pages – another plus for affiliate marketers
• Tracks your landing page click-through rate (CTR) – and with the LP CTR mod you get some really killer data
• Cloaks your affiliate links and hides your data from affiliate managers or product publishers so they don’t steal your campaigns
• You can modify Prosper202 to add the functionality you desire, if it’s not already in the package

Ok, I could really dig deeper and go into some detail of why these things are important, but hopefully you get the idea.

Let’s take a look at a couple of the con’s of Prosper202:

• If your a high volume ppc marketer with a ton of landing pages and ads, Prosper202 might not be for you.  It’s a little manual to setup so it works better for test campaigns and the average ppc marketer.
• Installs and runs on your server  – why is that an issue?

  Well server performance dictates your redirect speed.  So heavy ppc volume or ppv traffic can effect your redirect performance on a shared server. You can still start on a shared server, but performance can become an issue somewhat quickly.

  That means that Prosper202 works much better on a Virtual Private Server (VPS) or Dedicated Server.   This can get expensive if your just starting out.  A decent VPS is still pretty cost effective at around $50 a month.

Anyway you slice it Prosper202 has some serious tracking capabilities and a couple of downsides.  It’s not perfect for everyone, but you need to start somewhere and learn the ropes.  Figure out what you want in a tracking software.  Might as well start with FREE.
